On Monday, October 13, Monitor Merrick Bobb participated in a panel discussion about SPD and the Consent Decree hosted by the Loren Miller Bar Association, the Washington state and local affiliate of the National Bar Association (“NBA”), which is the oldest minority bar and the largest organization of African-American attorneys in the United States.
Merrick was joined on the panel by Office of Professional Accountability ("OPA") Director Pierce Murphy and Community Police Commission ("CPC") Executive Director Fé Lopez. Assistant Monitor Ron Ward moderated the discussion. The panelists were honored to have City Attorney Peter Holmes and CPC Co-Chair Lisa Daugaard in attendance for the important discussion.
The panel engaged in a wide-ranging and probing discussion of issues, including the SPD's use of in-car video technology, current work related to police stops and detentions of civilians, and the state of progress with respect to reforms related to use of force. A valuable question-and-answer period followed the panel's presentation.
The Monitoring Team thanks Association President Jamal Whitehead for organizing the in-depth and productive discussion.
